Dorchester is a market town in Southern-central Dorset and has been the county town of Dorset since 1305. Dorchester holds a market on Wednesdays and Sundays. It has six schools which are made up of three primary schools, two middle schools and just one secondary school.
Dorchester dates back to prehistoric times. The first settlements were based around Maiden Castle which is a large iron age hill fort that at the time was one of the most powerful settlements in pre-Roman Britain, with varying tribes having existed there since 4000BC. The town still shows signs of the Romans once being there as they walled the town and the remains can still be seen today. Many more roman artefacts can be seen in the county museum.
Dorchester remained a small walled town until late into the 19th century when new developments began. Over the following years, many major developments have taken place to house and employ Dorchester's rising population.
Dorchester has two railway stations one which is the South-western mainline that travels to London, Bournemouth and Southampton. The second being Dorchester west railway station which covers more local destinations such as Westbury, Bath and Bristol.
Dorchester is also the home to many shops of both local and national origin along with restaurants and public houses.
