Information about Launceston

Launceston castle from the street - click to zoom

Launceston is the ancient gateway to Cornwall. It houses its very own castle built in the 19th century by Brian de Bretagne the first Norman Earl of Cornwall. Launceston is the only walled town in Cornwall and was once the home to the Royal Mint. Launceston is also the home to the St Mary Magdalene church built in the 16th century. This is just one of four churches in the town as well as a Methodist Chapel and Kingdom hall.

Launceston has five schools, three of which are primry schools, one is a private school and the fifth is Launceston college. Launceston is also the home to Lawrence house which displays many historical artefacts and is known as one of the Southwest's finest museums.

Launceston today is the hive of activity with the Phoenix leisure centre that includes an indoor heated swimming pool along with squash courts and a gym. This can be found just a few minutes walk or drive from the town centre itself. There are also two Golf clubs one being Trethorne which also has its very own leisure farm; a fun place for children to visit and even have their birthday parties.

Launceston also has a steam railway just a few minutes walk from the town centre.

In the town centre along with the public houses and eateries, there are several varied take-aways and a large array of both national and local shops. Just a few minutes away by either car, foot or public transport you will find Tesco's, Focus, Homemaker, Argos and QS.

Overall there is something for everyone, even if you were to live in one of the small surrounding villages just a few miles away accessible by either car or public transport.
