Information about Lostwithiel

Lostwithiel Bridge - click to zoom

Lostwithiel is a small town in Cornwall set beside the Fowey river valley where the river runs through the centre of the town. Lostwithiel has its own railway station that is part of the Cornish main line that travels between Penzance and Plymouth. It is also accessible via the A390 road from Tavistock to Truro.

Lostwithiel's most notable buildings are St Bartholomew's Church and Restormel Castle. There is a small museum devoted to the history of the town. Once a stannary town, and for a period the most important in the country, it is now much decayed. There is a fine early fourteenth century bridge with five pointed arches. There are a number of shops, with several antique shops as Lostwithiel has the name of being the antique capital of Cornwall. Apart from antique shops it also has a pharmacy, post office and craft shops, as well as plenty more beside. Along with the shops, Lostwithiel also has lots of accommodation with two hotels, many Bed & Breakfasts, as wells as restaurants, tea rooms and public houses. Lostwithiel has two primary schools and children above primary school age can travel to Fowey Community College.
