Tavistock is a market town built next to the River Tavy below the slopes of the Dartmoor National park. Tavistock is a quaint town that still has a farmers' market which is held in the town square twice a month and an under cover pannier market which is held five days a week, dating back to 1105. Other than the markets, Tavistock also has a wide variety of shops both known nationally and locally. Just a little way out of the town you can find a larger Morrisons.
Tavistock is full of beauty and natural history, and it is suggested that local specialty cream tea was first served here, to workers during the restoration. One famous inhabitant is though to be Sir Francis Drake, rumoured to have been born in Tavistock in 1542.
Tavistock also holds a number of annual events, these are Music festival, Food and Drink festival, Balloon fiesta, Goose Fair and the Dickensian Evening.
Roughly 15 miles north of Plymouth and connected via the A386, the town is well worth a visit, especially in order to see the market.
