Torpoint is situated in the South-east of Cornwall and separated from the city of Plymouth by a stretch of water (the mouth of the river Tamar).
You can access Plymouth from Torpoint via passenger and vehicle ferries. The trip takes approximately 7 minutes and the ferries are pulled across the river by chains which then sink to the bottom of the river bed until they are to be used next time to allow ships to continue using the river.
Torpoint is an 18th century planned town and as the presence of Devonport Dockyard became ever more established, the town has grown with the workers of the Dockyard settling. On the west side of Torpoint lies the Royal Navy's main training facility, HMS Raleigh.
