Information about Truro

The magnificent Cathedral - click to zoom

Dating back to Norman times, a castle was built in the 12th century by Richard de Luci, Chief Justice of England in the reign of Henry II, who was granted land in Cornwall for his services to the court, including the area surrounding the confluence of the two rivers. He planted the town in the shadow of the castle and awarded it borough status to further economic activity.

Truro is Cornwall's only city and is most recognisable feature is its gothic-revival Cathedral, rising 76 m (250 ft) above the city at its highest spire. It took 30 years to build, from 1880 to 1910, and was built on the site of the old St. Mary's Church, consecrated over 600 years earlier.

Cobbled streets and Georgian architecture are also a feature but is is also the home to Coinage Hall which houses the antiques centre along with some beautiful parks and gardens; Victoria gardens can be found along side the river Kenwyn and Boscowan park has the river Truro running along side it.

Truro also has a large number of shops both local and international along with restaurants and public houses. Everything you would expect to find in your usual run of the mill city but with its own history and heritage!!
