Information about Wadebridge

The Royal Cornwall Show - click to zoom

Wadebridge is situated in North Cornwall on the Camel Estuary as with most of the towns in Cornwall it is called a market town but does not infact hold markets.

Original just Wade until 1468 when the town's bridge was built, in 1991 a foot bridge was needed so that people could safely cross the river Camel to get from the Egloshayle playing fields to the Jubilee fields. This bridge was constructed by Anneka Rice and her construction team as part of the popular T.V series some years ago 'Challenge Anneka'.

Up until 1967 Wadebridge had a railway line that ran from Wadebridge to Wonfordbridge with a branch line to Bodmin. The line was originally constructed in 1831 and was intended to carry sand from the Camel estuary to farms where it could then be used as fertiliser. This railway then became one of the first to carry passengers in 1834 then in 1967 the last train passenger train left Wadebridge due to railway cutbacks and the line was then turned into what is now known as the Camel Trail. The Camel Trail was resurfaced and know provides a 17 mile stretch of land for people of all ages to walk, ride bikes and horses.

Every year Wadebridge also hosts 'The Royal Cornwall Agricultural Show' this began in 1960 but the show originally started in Bodmin in 1793. The Royal Cornwall show takes places at the beginning of June each year and it lasts for three days and attracts around 120,000 visitors to the area and show itself. It is a place where you can go and have a really fun day out there is just so much going on its hard to know where to start. There are Sheep dog trials, Riding competitions, a Craft show and loads of games and activities to participate in.

Wadebridge has a number of different shops and the main street is now pedestrian only to free up some of the congestion in and around the town. In addition there are plenty of places to park not too far away.
