Devon is a large county in the South-west of England and it is bordered by Cornwall to the West and to the East Dorset and Somerset. Devon is the third largest county in England and has two separate coastlines, the north and the south. The county town is the cathedral city of Exeter and has two other independent cities: the port city of Plymouth and the Torbay conurbation of seaside resorts.
Devon is the only county in England to have two separate coastlines; the South West Coast Path runs along the entire length of both, around 65% of which is named as Heritage Coast. Inland, the Dartmoor National Park lies wholly in Devon, and the Exmoor National Park lies in both Devon and Somerset. Apart from these areas of high moorland the county has attractive rural scenery, and villages with thatched cob cottages. All these features make Devon a popular holiday destination. The variety of habitats means that there is a wide range of wildlife including over 100 species of various birds and animals in the county in a day.
Devon has so much to offer with a number of beautiful seaside resorts, historic towns and unique landscapes such as Dartmoor and Exmoor both being national parks. Devon's known for cream teas; scones filled with homemade strawberry jam and clotted cream. Beautiful rolling farmland and quaint villages scattered across one of the beautiful sites England has to offer.
A strong naval history is represented at Dartmouth College, where you'll also find Dartmouth prison, standing tall and forbidding on the moors. Mariners such as Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh are among the famous Devonians, as well as poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge and crime writer Agatha Christie.
